An Irishman who has been a resident of Chennai in the last 50 years recently underwent a successful hip surgery in India. Three months ago, ninety-nine-year-old Patrick Manning, an entrepreneur, injured his hips after falling in the bathroom.
Manning’s family decided to bring him to the Malar Hospital for further medical investigation after other hospitals refused to operate on Manning because of his advanced age. For more than 2 months, the Irishman had to suffer from his fractured hip and had to stay in bed during the period. He was beginning to get bed sores from being confined in bed.
Earlier this month, Manning was discharged from the hospital and was able to walk out on his own using a walker. Surgeons, headed by Dr. Nandkumar Sundaram the senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon, had successfully operated on his fractured hips. The procedure did not require hip replacement but a repair of the bone using a plate and screws.
A day after the surgery, Manning began to move around his bed with the help of his doctors. Just two days after his hip surgery, he was able to sit by himself. He was able to stand up a few days later with the help of a physical therapist.
