A hospital in India has successfully performed the Hybrid Norwood Procedure on a 7 day old baby . The procedure was performed at the MIOT Hospital in Chennai on a baby that was suffering from ‘Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome’, a rare congenital heart disease. The condition has left the baby’s left side of the heart malformed. That part of the heart was also unproductive and was unable to pump sufficient oxygen-rich blood to the body. The aorta, the main artery to the heart was also underdeveloped. HLHS is fatal if no intervention is performed or if the intervention is not performed soon enough. The patient was referred to the MIOT hospital by a hospital in Calicut.
The surgery was headed by the following specialists: Dr. Roberto Coelho, the Chief Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon of the MIOT Centre of Children’s Cardiac Care, and Dr. Sivakumar the Chief Pediatric Cardiologist and Senior Consultant of the same centre.
The Hybrid Norwood Procedure helps in preventing excessive blood flow to the lungs and ensure s sufficient blood flow to the whole body. This procedure does not require for the patient to be connected to an artificial heart lung machine. The procedure allows for faster recovery if infants.
The Norwood procedure is usually part of a series of open-heart surgeries performed on HLHS patients. The surgery is currently performed in selected hospitals around the world including in Canada, the USA and Germany. This was the first time that the surgery was successfully performed in India. The baby was discharged from the hospital 10 days after the surgery was performed.

Congrats to the family for a successful surgery, but how is a seven-year old a baby? If the procedure has faster recovery in infants, why wasn’t it done sooner?
