The government of India is now releasing special visas for foreign tourists traveling to India to receive medical care.  The release of the “medical visa” is part of the country’s efforts to promote medical tourism in India.

The medical visa allows holders to enter India and stay in the country of up to 12 months.  The visa can even be extended for another 12 months depending on the situation of the patient.  The extension of the visa will depend on the certification of the medical facility that the patient needs to extend his or her stay in India for medical reasons.  A tourist visa to India can only guarantee a stay of up to 6 months in the country.

The visa called the ‘M’ visa is issued exclusively to tourists who wish to visit India to receive health care from recognized medical institutions. The visa cannot be used for the purpose of migrating to India or for any other purposes.

There are certain guidelines that need to be met when applying for an ‘M’ visa.  The guidelines include: the patient has already sought treatment or medical guidance in their own country and has been advised to undergo specialized treatment; that the patient is seeking the specialized treatment form a recognized medical institution; priority shall be given to patients with serious ailments and other specific medical conditions including the need for neuro-surgery and organ transplants; the tourist is required to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days upon arrival to the country.
