Jordan Targeting US Patients for Medical Tourism Industry

Bookmark and Share

The Kingdom of Jordan is promoting its medical industry to US patients in a bid to get a good share of the multibillion medical tourism industry. Jordan, which is predominantly a desert, is poor in natural resources so it is hoping to tap into medical tourism.

Jordan unlike its neighboring countries is not rich in oil and depends largely on tourism, work remittances and foreign investments for its income.

Jordan is targeting US citizens because of the soaring health care costs in the United States. Aside from the lower medical costs in Jordan, the country also hopes to attract patients with the popular tourism destinations in the country including the Dead Sea.

Jordan’s Private Hospital Association also hopes to attract more patients with package deals that include air transport and accommodations. According to the association, medical travel packages will cost so much less than what a patient would have to spend in the US just for the surgery.

It is estimated that about 20,000 Americans will travel abroad to receive medical treatment this year. The medical industry is expected to earn at least $4 billion dollars from US patients in 2009. Jordan hopes to attract a large percentage of this number with a more aggressive campaign that includes a web campaign. Apart from the travel opportunity for patients, Jordan is also highlighting the fact that insurers can save money when they send patients to Jordan to receive medical treatment even if they choose to cover the airfare and the travel costs for family members of the patient.
