A card by Visa from the Bank of the Bahamas offers discounts to seven hospitals in South Florida. The discounts range from thirty to sixty percent.

The card was released to help Bahamians gain access to affordable health care. The card was in development for two years before it was released this month. It is proof that South Florida is geared to be a top medical tourism destination in America. South Florida sees medical tourism as a good opportunity to increase the business in the state. The Bank of Bahamas claims that card was not designed specifically to attract patients to get medical treatments in South Florida but to allow patients to afford health care. Foreign patients usually end up paying more because of private insurance so the visa card should allow patients to now afford health care in South Florida. The card allows patients to pay off their health care expenses for a period of time. The annual fee for the health card is $150 and the surcharge on transactions is at 3.5%. The card is ideal for Bahamians who may need surgery and other health care in the near future and want to have the surgery performed in South Florida. The card will help both the Bahamians requiring affordable health care and the medical tourism industry in South Florida.

The seven hospitals extending discounts to patients who have the Visa Cards are: the Mercy Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Jackson Memorial, Cleveland Clinic Florida, Miami Children’s Hospital, Broward General and the UM Health Systems. Two hospitals in the Bahamas- Centreville Medical Pavilion and Doctors Hospital also accept the special visa card.
