All India Institute of Medical Services Push Minimal Invasive Surgery

The All India Institute of Medical Services (AIIMS) is advocating the use of a minimally invasive spinal surgery for the spine. The doctors are advocating the use of the new method because it is safe, reduces blood loss, involves less pain and has a better recovery result. This was discussed during a Minimal Access Spinal Surgery Workshop at AIIMS.

In traditional spine surgeries, a cut about two inches long is made and this can result in the loss of excessive blood as well as pain for the patient. The surgery can also result in a longer period of immobility for the patient.

With the new procedure being advocated by the doctors, there is minimal incision which means a minimal dissection of tissues. With the new procedure, a small tube is inserted to the skin and a special micro camera is used to see the nerves and the vertebral disc.

According to Sumit Sinha, a professor of neurosurgery at the AIIMS the new minimally invasive procedure reduces blood loss precisely because of the minimal dissection of the tissues. With the procedure, there is also less pain post surgery and faster recovery rate. According to Sinha, this is very safe in treating spine problems, which can be very common in India. The method can be used to treat different spinal disorders such as slipped disc, lumbar disc, vertebral fracture and other spinal problems.

The Minimal Access Spinal Surgery Workshop was held over three days in AIIMS.
