Thailand recently launched the Health Travel Industry Research Society of Thailand or HTRIS. The group, a non-profit, private sector initiative, was established to benefit the international medical tourism society in the country.

The group will serve as the media watchdog for the medical tourism industry in the country. This will help keep Thailand’s prominence as a health care destination for foreign patients. Thailand remains the top destination for foreign patients among the countries in Asia with strong medical tourism industries. Other countries competing in the health tourism market are Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and India. The research society will also compile white papers regarding the industry.

The society will work closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Office of the Prime Minister. The group will also work with various government agencies, NGOs and international representatives in the medical tourism industry.

The society aims to keep the country’s standing in the world health tourism market despite the aggressive marketing and promotion of the medical tourism industry of other countries in Asia and other parts of the globe.

The tourism industry in Thailand earns about $15.4 and is responsible for over 6% of the country’s gross domestic product. But in the last few months, there has been a decline in tourist arrivals to the country. Medical tourism is being considered as the sector that will help boost the country’s tourism sector. Thailand’s private and government sectors are working to attract more tourists- both visitors and foreign patients, to the country.
