Lucknow in India now offers craniofacial surgery, a process in reconstructive surgery that involves reconstruction or contouring of the skull, face and jaws. It involves not just skin and tissue deformities but deformities in the bones as well. The procedure is much more complicated than other plastic and reconstructive surgery such as liposuction and earlobe reconstruction. It is often performed on patients with abnormalities in the shape of the face, depressed cheek bones, and other problems that involve more than just the tissues or the skin and require changes to be made to the facial bone structure of the patient.
The patients who usually undergo craniofacial surgeries are usually born with the deformities or end up with such deformities due to accidents. There are also patients who end up with bone deformities because of tumors and infections.
Aside from being a more complicated procedure, craniofacial treatments also involves plastic surgery, dental surgery and neurosurgery during post-operative care.
Lucknow is the third place in North India to offer such a procedure. Other places to have expertise on such a procedure are the PGI Chandigarh and Delhi.
The place is now being marketed by the state as a destination for medical tourism. In the government run Chhatrapati Shahunji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU), an average of 10 patients visit the department of plastic surgery per week but the Medical University cannot work at optimum level because of the limited facilities. In Lucknow, the private sector does not have this problem.
