Open Rhinoplasty: Nose Job, Nose Surgery, Plastic Surgery Nose, Nose Plastic Surgery, Rhinoplasty

What is it?

Open rhinoplasty or nose surgery is surgery to change the appearance and nostril size and shape of the nose and bone supporting it. This can make the nose appear smaller or larger and change the shape of the cartilage supporting the nose. Nose plastic surgery or rhinoplasty is helpful for thinning out a too wide nose or straightening a crooked nose. Some patients want to make their noses a bit shorter and others a bit longer. Still others ask a plastic surgeon to help their nose become more distinguished when they seek a nose job. There are many things one can achieve through a simple yet complicated nose job.

The Operation

There are many different ways to proceed with a rhinoplasty or nose job. An open rhinoplasty is one. During this procedure a plastic surgeon makes a small incision on the under part of the nasal tip or between the two nostrils. The surgeon also makes incisions on the inside of the nose. This is a popular form of rhinoplasty, more popular than a closed rhinoplasty where the surgeon makes the incision on the inside of the nose only. The open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon to see more of the inside of the nose.

The only problem with the open rhinoplastly is that it can facilitate more swelling, however it does allow for a better view and possibly a better nose job.

Alternatives to Surgery

There are not many alternatives to surgery, or at least no many that people find as effective as nose surgery. If someone snores then can try many over-the-counter sleep aids to try to correct snoring. Some are sprays that supposedly help open the airway. Nose surgery is more efficient at opening air passages especially if they are caused by a deviated septum or some other structural problem.

There are butterfly tapes people can place on their nose to widen the nostrils so they breathe clearly, but these also do not always work effectively to control snoring. There are lots of things people do to improve breathing. Nasal surgery however is very commonly one of the more popular forms of facial surgery today.

Before the Operation

Before the surgery your doctor will discuss your surgical options. Some people may find a surgery to correct a physical problem like a deviated septum for sleep apnea, a sleep condition that may prove life-threatening, partially covered by insurance. Your doctor may work to help you get this part of the surgery reimbursed.

Other times you may have to pay for this surgery 100 percent out of pocket. You may want to talk about financing with your dental office.

The anesthesiologist will offer sedation or general anesthesia. Usually surgery lasts up to 3 hours and patients return home that day. The pain level is usually medium. Typically pain medication for up to 10 days helps with this. Bruising also lasts for up to a week. Black eyes may also be common in some people.

After the Operation- In the Hospital

This will be the time for initial recovery, specifically to wake up from the anesthesia. Each physician and medical facility will have their own requirements for discharge of the patient.

After the Operation- At Home

After the operation you will return home with another driver. It helps to have someone care for you for the first 48 hours following surgery. Often you will have packing in your nose to help control bleeding. This will remain in place for up to 7 days, longer if the surgery involved breaking the nose to realign the nasal structures.

Most people can return to work within one week if there are no severe complications, however they will still have much bruising and swelling. Exercise is restricted for up to 4 weeks in most cases, although contact sports should be avoided for up to 6 weeks.

Possible Complications

Many complications can arise from open rhinoplasty. These may include:

  • Excessive bleeding - some patients may bleed a bit following surgery. They may require packing to help with this, which is nothing more than cotton or other materials placed in the nostril to help clot the blood.
  • Sinusitis - This is an infection of the sinus cavities, often caused by inflammation. This may require antibiotic therapy.
  • Bruising, swelling and extreme pain - this can make it awkward to carry out your business, to go about town and do your thing. Some people feel their face looks unusual for a while following surgery, and in some cases it make take longer than usual for the swelling to recede.

General Advice

Nasal surgery is a common field of specialization in facial plastic surgery. Open rhinoplasty can help with many different health problems including snoring, sleep apnea, troubles breathing and help improve your overall appearance and self confidence. Many people find their life dramatically improves following recovery from an open rhinoplasty.

An open rhinoplasty is usually preferred to a closed one because the doctor can see far better into the nasal structures and cartilage in the nose. Make sure before you see your doctor and schedule your surgery that you know how much your doctor plans to charge, what exactly they plan to do, how long it will take to heal and what references and qualifications your doctor has.

Here are some other tips that will enhance your nasal surgery:

  • Be sure you discuss your medical history with your doctor.
  • Avoid any over-the-counter nasal medicines or nasal decongestants.
  • Make sure you know that many people require a revision of their nasal surgery, as many as 10-20%.
  • Try to avoid blowing your nose vigorously or putting anything foreign in your nose for a couple of weeks following surgery.
