Thigh Lift: aka Thighplasty, Calf Lifts, Thigh Lifts, Saddle Lifts

What is it?

Thighplasty or a thigh and leg lift is a procedure that allows a surgeon to remove excess skin and fat from the thighs alone. Thighplasty is an ideal surgery people that are somewhat fit and healthy that has excess skin or fat in the thighs, especially around the upper thighs and hips. This surgery may also help contour areas where saddlebags tend to form.

The best candidates for thighplasty may include:

  • People that have stretch marks in the thighs or find their skin is not elastic like it used to be
  • People that have lost a lot of weight and find their skin sags along the thighs or the hips
  • Individuals that exercise but find their thighs and hips do not seem to tone well or have a problem sagging, but look good if physically held up high
  • Individuals that have stubborn fat that will not disappear from the saddlebag areas and thighs or hips

Many people ask for thighplasty to help them shed the last 10 to 15 pounds of stubborn fat or skin that tends to hand around the thighs and hips or simply the thighs when they embark on a permanent weight loss journey.

The Operation

The thighplasty surgery is a relatively straightforward plastic surgery procedure. Most patients will meet with their general plastic surgeon ahead of time to talk about their desires and plastic surgery options. This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia so you will also meet with an anesthetist. You may opt to have liposuction performed at the same time you have a thighplasty or thigh life performed to help reduce more fat and not just tighten saggy or unwanted skin.

Many different techniques are considered before surgery to give you the best possible look and final outcome. The surgeon will take into consideration your anatomy, height and weight. The surgeon will often make an incision along the inner or outer thigh and up to the buttock crease and then remove the excess skin and tissue before placing sutures to tighten up the skin. They may also remove some fat if performing a liposuction or merely cut away some of the fat while performing the thighplasty procedure.

The entire procedure won’t take but a couple of hours depending on the amount of tissue and skin that needs to be removed during the surgery. Generally the more saggy skin that needs to be removed the longer the surgery.

Alternatives to Surgery

It is hard to reduce saggy skin without surgery; however there are always alternatives for removing excess fat from the body. Exercise can help reduce the appearance of dimpled skin. Strength training in particular is very helpful for improving the contour of the body. Some people opt for liposuction instead of a thigh lift to help reduce fat in the skin; however this can actually increase the appearance of cellulite in some people, especially women. Often a thigh lift can help with this, as thighplasty often helps improve the contour and appearance of dimples, wrinkles and saggy skin all at once.

If you prefer to wear compression garments, this can sometimes hide saggy skin and stretch marks if you want to go out for a night on the town without permanently changing the shape of your body.

Before the Operation

Most patients need to stop smoking and drinking before surgery. It is especially important to stop smoking in the weeks before surgery to encourage the body to boost its immune system so it will heal properly and quickly. Smoking can have dramatic impacts on the body’s ability to heal well following plastic surgery. If you have a problem with smoking make sure you consult with your plastic surgeon honestly about this, as he or she can work with you to come up with a workable solution.

Your doctor will also advise you to keep away from NSAIDs before surgery to reduce the risks of bruising and excess bleeding.

After the Operation- In the Hospital

The recovery period in the hospital prior to the patient’s release is a time to allow them to wake up from anesthesia and to prepare them to depart home. Specific post-operative instructions will be given as well as a follow up appointment which are important for the overall healing process.

After the Operation- At Home

You will need someone to drive you home following your surgery. It will help you to have someone to help take care of you for 24 to 48 hours following surgery.

Possible Complications

Some of the more common complications associated with surgery include the risk of infection and scarring. Generally these risks are minimized especially if you have no pre-existing health problems and if you get a referral to a well-qualified doctor and specialist health care clinic.  Make sure you seek referrals for a specialist that is familiar with the thigh lift procedure or thighplasty. You can always verify plastic surgeons credentials. Sometimes cheaper is better and sometimes it pays to do your homework and research a doctor’s references and credentials to protect yourself. Even celebrities get duped by criminals posing as plastic surgeon professionals offering bargain prices, so be sure to protect yourself.
