According to a new report by Research and Markets, the medical tourism in India will continue to grow through the year 2012.  The report, entitled “Booming Medical Tourism in India”, reports that medical tourism remains the fastest growing segment of the economy in India.

Lucknow in India now offers craniofacial surgery, a process in reconstructive surgery that involves reconstruction or contouring of the skull, face and jaws. It involves not just skin and tissue deformities but deformities in the bones as well.

The All India Institute of Medical Services (AIIMS) is advocating the use of a minimally invasive spinal surgery for the spine. The doctors are advocating the use of the new method because it is safe, reduces blood loss, involves less pain and has a better recovery result. This was discussed during a Minimal Access Spinal Surgery Workshop at AIIMS.

An American national has successfully undergone a rare back surgery in India wherein four of his backbone discs were replaced in a single procedure. The Indian doctors who performed the procedure claim that this is a first in Asia. The operation was performed by a team of spinal surgeons. The team was headed by Harshavardhan Hegde. The marathon operation involving the replacement of two discs in the neck and two in the lower back lasted over eight hours.

The Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) will hold its annual conference in Dubai this year. TAAI is the largest travel trade body in India. This year’s conference- The 58th Indian Travel Congress, which will be held from September 29 to October 2 will focus on India’s medical tourism industry. The event will be held at the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City.
